Japan offers elderly drivers discounted noodle soup to get off the road

November 25, 2016 Updated: November 25, 2016 06:23 PM

TOKYO // Japanese police are offering noodle discounts to elderly citizens who hand in their driving licences, promising them cheaper ramen soup in exchange for improved road safety.

The edible offer comes after a series of deadly accidents caused by cars driven by the elderly — a growing problem in a country where 4.8 million people aged 75 or older hold a licence.

In the hopes of appealing to seniors via their appetites police in the central prefecture of Aichi on Friday started offering the discounts via a tie-up with a local restaurant chain.

Elderly drivers who give up their permits will receive a certificate from police which they can present when ordering the noodles to see the price reduced from 590 ($5.20) yen to 500 yen, said an Aichi police spokesman.

Last month, a six-year-old boy died and 11 others were injured after an 87-year-old driver's pickup truck hit elementary schoolchildren walking to school on a street in Yokohama.

The country is introducing a new rule in March under which drivers aged 75 or older must pass cognitive tests when renewing their licences.

Aiming to set an example, a 97-year-old high-ranking Buddhist priest last week returned his driver's licence, calling on his elderly compatriots to do the same.

"It's stupid to try to maintain your licences just out of pride," said Taa Shinen

Following inclusion of BPL families from the minority communities in the scheme, the minister said members of these faith can now go on a pilgrimage free of cost.

JAMSHEDPUR: State tourism minister Amar Kumar Bauri on Wednesday announced that senior citizens from the Muslim and Christian community belonging to the below poverty line (BPL) section can now avail the Mukhya Mantri Teerth Darshan Yojna benefit and go on their respective pilgrimage.

Following inclusion of BPL families from the minority communities in the scheme, the minister said members of these faith can now go on a pilgrimage free of cost.

"Prospective beneficiaries (of pilgrimage scheme) from Muslim and Christian community can go for a pilgrimage tour to Ajmer Sharif and Goa, respectively, free of cost," Bauri said.

The minister, who arrived in the city to take stock of the preparations for the second leg of the pilgrimage scheduled for November 18, said 1,000 senior citizens of the community will travel to Puri for a two-day pilgrimage.

"Along with identifying people (for the pilgrimage) and making adequate arrangements for their smooth travel, the government is doing everything to ensure a hassle-free trip," Bauri said.

The minister said he will review the preparations with officials concerned in the district administration and also get in touch with the divisional railway officials.

The first leg of the pilgrimage for the BPL community to Puri was flagged off by chief minister Raghubar Das on November 12.

The pilgrimage scheme was introduced following an agreement between Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation and Jharkhand Tourism Development Corporation earlier this year.

The minister said the scheme is already receiving an overwhelming response.
