Jayalalitha said in the first phase, the scheme for free travel for senior citizens would be implemented in the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) buses in Chennai. PTI File Photo.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa today announced free bus travel for senior citizens in Chennai metropolitan area from her 68th birthday on February 24.

Making the announcement in the state assembly, she asserted that with this the AIADMK government has fulfilled "all the electoral promises" made by the party in 2011 in the state, which is set to go to polls in barely three months.

"We had made a poll promise in our election manifesto that senior citizens would be provided free bus passes...I am happy to say that with this announcement we have fulfilled all the promises made in the AIADMK's election manifesto in 2011," she said.

The free travel, with a cap of ten journeys in a month, is the latest in the series of freebies implemented by the AIADMK regime such as cost-free milch cows, sheep, mixers, grinders and fans and laptop for students.

"I am also very happy to say that besides fulfilling all our electoral promises, we have also implemented various other welfare schemes," she said amid thunderous applause from ruling party legislators and allies.

She said in the first phase, the scheme for free travel for senior citizens would be implemented in the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) buses in Chennai.

Under the plan, elderly people over the age of 60 may travel in all the MTC buses barring air-conditioned buses. The beneficiaries would be given ten tokens per month and they could give it to conductors in buses and travel free of cost.

"The scheme envisaging free travel for senior citizens in Chennai Metropolitan Corporation buses will be implemented from February 24 and after eliciting people's response it will be extended to other places," she said.

Those willing to avail the scheme should fill in an application form and submit it to transport authorities and get an identity card and tokens for travel. The forms could be obtained from transport corporation depots and transport department website, she said.
There is no deadline to submit application forms and these can be presented at the transport corporation bus depots any time, she said.

Soon after she made the announcement, eight legislators, Transport Minister P Thangamani and Speaker Dhanapal praised and thanked her for the new initiative.

o undertake a free pilgrimage of six days' duration to temples at Puri and Konark in Odisha for senior citizens of the state. The instructions that have been given by the UP governor were circulated via a government order of principal secretary Navneet Sehgal. As many as 1,044 citizens of the state will be able to benefit from this free scheme
.
"Though the trip is mainly for senior citizens, other residents of the state can also apply for the initiative. This trip will be completed with the collaboration of IRCTC, under which the interested residents will board trains from Lucknow and will be taken to Odisha. The travel itinerary of residents of other UP districts to Lucknow will be scheduled via Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) buses," read the government order issued by Navneet Sehgal, principal secretary, UP religious affairs.

The trip is scheduled from February 24 to February 29, 2016. Interested citizens can either apply online on www.samajwadishravanyatra.upgov.info till January 25 or submit their application to the respective district magistrates by February 5, 2016.

"From each district a maximum of 10 applicants will be allowed for the travel on first come first serve basis. The remaining people for the trip will be decided at the state government level. A waiting list will also be made so that if anyone backs off, another resident can be accommodated," read the order.

The order has come after a good response to UP government's 'Samajwadi Shravan Yatra', facilitating senior citizens to undertake free pilgrimage. "While on board, passengers will be served breakfast, lunch, evening tea and dinner. Each coach of the train will also have a tour operator and a security guard to ensure that the passengers have a safe and hassle-free journey," the order added.

KMT plans passes at discount for sr citizens - Times of India Bus fare concession

KMT plans passes at discount for sr citizens

TNN | Jan 6, 2016, 02.24 PM IST

Kolhapur: The municipal corporation's transport body will grant 50% concession to senior citizens with periodic travel passes.

The decision was made after several organisations associated with senior citizens wrote to the Kolhapur Municipal Transport administration to come up with a new policy to address the concerns of those travelling by the KMT-run buses.

According to the final draft of the policy, four kinds of periodic passes will be offered to senior citizens - seven days, 15 days, 30 days and three months.

At present, over 1,000 senior citizens use periodic passes, but they do not get any concession.
KMT transport inspector Raghunath Dhupkar said, "At present, senior citizens get a discount on regular tickets. But, on many occasions, the discount doesn't add up to round figures and senior citizens find it difficult to pay change. From now on, the discount on regular tickets will be cancelled and concessions will be applied on periodic passes. This will also help us get many senior citizens to use public transport."

The KMT has been providing discount on regular tickets for senior citizens, but many times, they are forced to pay the normal amount due to non-availability of change.

They are also unnecessarily harassed by the ticket collectors. The transport body has also decide to provide lifetime cards to all senior citizens.

"At present, senior citizens have to pay Rs 25 to get ID cards renewed every year. But they find it difficult to provide photographs and other documents needed for renewal. That is why we will charge a one-time fee of Rs 100 for the cards which will not have to be renewed every year," said Dhupkar.

As of now, the transport utility allows concession in ticket prices for students, physically-challenged people and freedom fighters and senior citizens. The concession varies from 25% to 100%. Officials believe that the revenue loss due to the concession is not of prime importance, but getting these people to use public transport is the bigger priority.
