M. V. Centre for Diabetes plans to offer concessions to senior citizens
The M. V. Centre for Diabetes in Chennai will offer concessions for senior citizens above the age of 80.
The centre has launched an outpatient privilege card that gives a 50 per cent concession on tests such as fasting, blood sugar, urea creatinine, foot examination, lipid profile and ECG. Dr V. Shanta, Chairperson, Cancer Institute, who launched the initiative, said: "Today, I am happy to see the people aged 80 years and above living with diabetes and leading almost a healthy life. I would acknowledge you all as living examples of people who have successfully encountered the challenges put down by this chronic disease 'diabetes' by following the appropriate lifestyle, keeping your body and mind healthy."
Dr Vijay Viswanathan, Managing Director, M. V. Centre for Diabetes, branch of M.V. Hospital for Diabetes, said: "The review of our records of patients aged 80 years and above revealed that 40 per cent of them are living for more than 20 years with diabetes. About 55 per cent are still on oral medications without insulin, 28 per cent are living without any diabetic complications, 2 per cent has undergone amputations and only 8 per cent has undergone coronary artery bypass graft surgery. This shows that with regular medicine and lifestyle modification and proper awareness any one with diabetes can live a long and healthy life."
