With elections less than a year away, Odisha is witnessing an interesting sop opera with Chief Minister, Naveen Patnaik doling out largesse to almost every section of the voters. After Rs.1 kg rice, free bicycles and free blankets, it is now the turn of free mobile phones for farmers.

Among the other populist decisions of the government have been payment of Rs.200 to each elderly, widow and disabled persons once a year as winter assistance to buy blankets and provision of Rs.100 for around 37 lakh people for buying umbrellas. The umbrella scheme initially meant for pension holders in rural areas has also been expanded to urban areas and would now also benefit the physically challenged, widows, destitutes and senior citizens.
