CHENNAI: On the occasion of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15, HelpAge India, an NGO working for the disadvantaged
senior citizens launched an app at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital here on Tuesday targeting the elderly. The HelpAge SOS app, which stands for 'Save Our Seniors', which is available on Google Play Store, has three main components. The first is an SOS button which if pressed, will relay the GPS position of the user to the nearest HelpAge State office and connect them to their helpline, available 24x7. In case of emergencies, it will connect them to the local police station, hospital or old-age home.
There are two other buttons, one on 'critical elder issues' — which provides information on health, active aging, financial planning for elders, writing wills and legacies, and senior citizens' rights — and another one on 'market discounts', which offers information on where the elderly can avail senior citizen retail discounts. Once the app is downloaded, all these features are available without an internet connection.
The app was officially launched by chief guest Dr Isaac Christian Moses, dean, Madras Medical College, and was received by special guest S N Seshasai, additional commissioner of police (L&O North), Greater Chennai. Speaking to an audience of elders, students and doctors, Edwin Babu, joint director (programs), HelpAge India, Chennai, elaborated on the necessity and features of the app. "A survey conducted by HelpAge over fiveyears ago found that a lot of elders took abuse for granted. There was no way for them to reach out for help," said Babu. "Even a lot of youngsters did not realise that they were indirectly abusing the elderly. This app, which is being launched nationally, will be a helpline for anyone directly affected by or witnessing to elder abuse."
