Old Age Pension for 70+ increased to Rs 1500 per month in Delhi

 Delhi increases senior citizens' pension
The Delhi government Monday decided to hike the monthly pension of
senior citizens, who are above 70 years, from Rs.1,000 to Rs.1,500,
with effect from October 1, 2011. The move, which will benefit more
than 160,000 people, comes ahead of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi
elections scheduled to be held in 2012. 'All the senior citizens above
70 years will get Rs.1,500 as a monthly pension,' Chief Minister
Sheila Dikshit told reporters here.
The government has been providing pensions of Rs.1,000 to senior
citizens, who are above 60 years, residing in Delhi for five years and
whose annual family income is less than Rs.60,000 from all sources,
she added.
The pension is sanctioned under the old age financial assistance
scheme of the social welfare department. Presently, 3,61,987
beneficiaries are listed under the scheme. The city government will
release an additional budget allocation of Rs.34 crore to meet the
enhanced liability

Free Cab service to senior citizens in DElhi

New Delhi: Delhi is home to more than 7 lakhs senior citizens and just
to make life a little better for them, The Path, an NGO, has come up
with a noble idea to provide them a free cab service.

Buzurgon Ke Humsafar (old peoples' companion) provides a driver and a
vehicle free of cost to these elderly citizens.You just need to dial
9999-866-966 to avail of this service. This initiative has been
started by an NGO working for the senior citizens.
Director, The Path said, "Mujhe aisa lagta tha ki woh jahan rehte hain
wahan rehte huye unki life ko hum thoda better bana sakte hain (Where
ever they stay, we can make their life a little better)."
Senior citizens can also use the service if they want to have a day
out. The Path provides for a special cab on Saturdays for picnics.
That's not all – the organisation also has a provision for emergency
services. The initiative has been welcomed.One senior citizen says,
"Main paralysis ka patient hoon, jab bhi gaadi book karte hain mil
jati hai, usse bahut sahuliyat hoti hai (I am a paralytic, whenever I
book a vehicle, I get it, it very convenient)."
Another senior citizen says, "Mera accident hua tha, beta office jata
hai toh lekar nahin ja sakta tha hospital roz. Inhone badi madad ki (I
had an accident, my son goes to work and he can't take me to the
hospital everytime. The Path has been very helpful in this regard)."
The Buzurgon ke Humsafar has only 5 cars in their fleet for now but as
they move on with their journey, they hope to add many more to it.

DTC buses make travel free for senior citizens

DTC buses make travel free for senior citizensNew Delhi: In a "gift"
to lakhs of senior citizens on the eve of World Elders Day, the Delhi
government today announced for them monthly DTC bus passes on payment
of nominal Rs 50 for travelling in non-AC buses and Rs 150 for
travelling in AC buses.
There will be no income ceiling for issuance of the passes to senior
citizens aged 60 and above.
"The monthly passes will be issued to all senior citizens in the city
and they will only have to provide proof of age to get it," Transport
Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely said, adding the passes would be issued
from tomorrow.
He said the scheme is a gift to the senior citizens on the eve of
tomorrow's 'World Elders Day'.
 Earlier, concessional bus passes were issued based on income ceilings
to senior citizens. DTC has so far issued 4.5 lakhs passes to senior
citizens based on the income ceilings.
Lovely also announced extending free travel to blind persons in
air-conditioned buses also in Delhi and NCR region. Till now blind
persons could travel free only in non-AC buses.
Noting that financial health of DTC has improved significantly after
induction of the low floor buses, he said the daily average revenue
collection has increased to Rs 3.5 crore against Rs 75 lakh a few
months back.
He said transport department was trying very hard to further improve
the services of the DTC and as part of the efforts, global positioning
system has been installed in all the low floor buses to track their
movement and ensure adherence of the time table.

Free Dialysis service for Senior citizens Delhi

FREE DIALYSIS FOR SENIOR CITIZENS in DELHI

Delhi government today said it will soon provide free dialysis services to senior citizens and steps are being taken to ensure that poor people do not face any difficulty in getting free treatment in hospitals.

On the ocassion of the International Day of older persons, the city government's Health Department organised special health camps in 24 of its hospitals.

A large number of senior citizens were handed over spectacles and hearing aids by Health Minister Ashok Kumar Walia and East Delhi MP Sandeep Dikshit.

"Due to availability of quality health services across Delhi during the last decade, the average longevity has gone up substantially. The population of persons over the age of 60 years has tripled in the last five decades in India," he said.

In Delhi, there were about 8 lakh senior citizens during 2001, which has increased to 14 lakh as of now.

Indian Railways gives 40% to male senior citizens (JUne 2011)

Indian Railways senior citizen concession, new rules from June
Ahmedabad, 25 May, 2011

In a bid to provide maximum benefit to senior citizens, the Ministry of Railways has decided to increase the element of concession to 40% from existing 30% for male senior citizens who are above 60 years of age. The concessional fare of 40% will be applicable o­n tickets purchased o­n and after 1st June, 2011. In case of tickets already issued for travel on and after 1st June, 2011, refund of difference of fares will not be admissible.

In case of women senior citizens, the minimum age for availing senior citizens concession has been reduced to 58 years from the existing 60 years. The element of concession remains to be 50 per cent.

The concession to senior citizens is granted in the basic fares of Mail/Express trains and all inclusive fares of Rajdhani/Shatabdi/Jan Shatabdi trains.

Senior citizens are given concession through PRS(Passenger Reservation System) on demand(and not by default). In such case senior citizen has to carry some document showing proof of their age or date of birth, issued by any Government institution/Agency/Local Body. This may be in the form of an Identity Card, Ration Card, Driving License, Passport, Educational certificate, certificate from Local Bodies like Panchayat/Corporation/Municipality, or any other authentic and recognized document to be produced, if demanded by authorized Railway Official during the journey.

MSRTC gives 50% discount to senior citizens plus respect!

MSRTC employees told to treat senior citizens with respectTNN Jun 26,
2011, 03.49am ISTPUNE: The Maharashtra State Road Transport
Corporation (MSRTC) has issued directives to all the divisional
controllers to direct conductors, supervisors and officials to ensure
that senior citizens availing the state transport facility are treated
with respect and are given the 50 per cent concession in ticket
charges intended for them, if they submit the requisite documents for
residence and age proof.
The transport utility has also given a list of documents which could
be considered as valid proof for senior citizens to get the concession
in ticket charges.

Mumbai Metro Rail offers discount to senior citizens

challenged persons and senior citizens can avail concessions when they
travel on the Metro's first line (Versova to Ghatkopar).
Officials said that the exact amount of concession has not yet been
finalized. The Metro fare may be pegged at Rs 6 for the first three
km, Rs 8 for distances from three to eight km and Rs 10 for anything
beyond eight km.
"We will also have special lifts at stations to aid physically
challenged commuters . The Metro coaches will have space reserved for
wheelchairs. We are taking all measures to ensure that they have
smooth commute ," an official said.

Healthcare discounts in Hyderabad

Association of Senior Citizens (Lions Bhavan, near Paradise Secunderabad) pioneered the cause of fighting healthcare costs with a view to mitigating the hardship of senior citizens. The Association has conducted many seminars on healthcare for elders. It is actively supporting setting up of many generic medicines shops in Hyderabad in collaboration with APSCCON. The association has also been fighting for low cost affordable health insurance schemes for the aged.  

One of many such initiatives was to compile a directory of Chemists, Diagnostic centers, doctors - (Allopathy, Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Dentists, ophthalmologists, specialists) and hospitals which have agreed to give discounts on their services, consultations, facilities etc. A couple of years ago the association brought out such a compilation in printed booklet format. It had soon gone out of print due to heavy demand. However a soft copy (Excel file format) is available with me for anyone interested. The data is slightly old but nevertheless useful  We request volunteers to carry out updating this booklet.

JetLite. To avail of this concession, you have to fill the "Concession
Form" and submit it along with a photograph and proof of age. This
discounted fare can either be issued through any of the JetLite
ticketing offices or any of it authorized Travel Agents. All taxes are
paid as applicable to an Adult guest. Senior Citizen's concession
forms are available with your local Travel Agent, any JetLite offices.
This concession is available subject to applicable terms and
conditions. Note: Foreign nationals need not fill up a Concession Form
or apply for an Identity Card, but can avail of the Senior Citizen

Air India offers 45% discount to senior citizens

Application: All types of journeys in economy class on domestic sectors. Fares: 45% of the normal economy class basic fare. Taxes and surcharges applicable. Documentation: Senior citizen’s discount will be offered on submission of the following documents. (a) A photocopy of document certifying the passenger’s age / date of birth e.g. School leaving certificate, certificate from the municipal corporation, passport, certificate from employer from public sector undertaking or government organizations where the senior citizen was employed, ration card, election commission card or Air India identity card issued to senior citizens. (b) A document confirming the resident status of the senior citizens (c) In case of foreigners residing in India, details of the resident permit. (d) Two stamp size photographs. (e) Application form filled in duplicate as per the format in appendix ‘a’. Station manager / reservation manager is authorized to approve any other document for ‘proof of age’ besides those listed in (a), if he feels otherwise satisfied.  He may also under exceptional circumstances, depending upon the merit of the case, use his discretion for granting senior citizen’s discount. Air India will issue identity cards to the senior citizens free of cost when an application, filled in duplicate, in the format as per ‘appendix ‘a’ along with two stamp-size photographs and document for proof of age and resident status is submitted to an Air India office. Signature of the senior citizen on the ‘form’ or on the ‘identity card’ issued for the grant of senior citizen discount is not mandatory. Presence of the senior citizen for issuance of the ticket or identity card will not be required so long as the photographs and the document for the ‘proof of age’ and resident status are submitted. Once the identity card is made ‘application form’ will not be required to be filled each time a ticket is purchased under senior citizen discount. At the time of check-in:  the identity card or the ticket jacket having the photograph of the senior citizen will be checked and also the boarding pass issued to the senior citizen will be punched. At the boarding point:  the identity card or the ticket jacket having the photograph of the senior citizen will be checked. Eligibility: For Indians  Male /Female senior citizens residing permanently in India and who have completed the age of 65 years on the date of commencement of journey. For foreigners Male /Female senior citizens who are residing in India and holding resident permit and who have completed the age of 65 years on the date of commencement of journey.
